The Children’s Scale of Hostility and Aggression: Reactive/Proactive (C-SHARP)

Introduction & Development || User Agreement & Instructions || Download C-SHARP (must view agreement first)

Introduction & Development

The Children’s Scale of Hostility and Aggression: Reactive/Proactive (C-SHARP) is an instrument for measuring aggressive and hostile behavior in children with developmental disabilities.  This scale was derived through factor analysis of a sample of 365 children with developmental disabilities.

The following scientific publication describes the development of the C-SHARP:

Farmer, C. & Aman, M. (2009). Development of the Children's Scale of Hostility and Aggression: Reactive/Proactive (C-SHARP). Research in Developmental Disabilities, 30, 1155-1167.

Farmer, C. & Aman, M. (2008). Psychometric properties of the Children’s Scale of Hostility and Aggression (C-SHARP). Submitted for publication.

Professionals working in the mental health field are welcome to copy and use the C-SHARP for clinical and research purposes. This includes physicians, licensed psychologists, licensed social workers, licensed counselors, and individuals working under the direct supervision of such professionals. Non-professionals are urged not to make copies of these instruments.

We also ask that all individuals who work with the C-SHARP abide by the understandings outlined in the "Agreement" document, which also appears on this web page.
If professionals have questions about the C-SHARP, please contact: Cristan Farmer, M.A., phone 614-292-7022; e-mail farmer.107@osu.edu or Michael Aman, Ph.D., phone 614-688-4196; e-mail aman.1@osu.edu.

User Agreement and Instructions

We are happy to provide copies of the Children’s Scale of Hostility and Aggression: Reactive/Proactive (C-SHARP) to clinicians and researchers. However, in return, we ask that users of the scale abide by the following simple guidelines:

  1. Please do not alter the appearance, wording, or scoring system without prior agreement of the developers, Cristan Farmer (Farmer.107@osu.edu) or Michael Aman (aman.1@osu.edu).

  2. We ask that researchers who employ the C-SHARP cite the developmental papers in any resulting publications. Two research articles describing the C-SHARP and its psychometrics are currently submitted for publication. We ask any users to cite it as follows:

Farmer, C. & Aman, M.

Please check back for updated information regarding publications.

  3. We suggest that workers who receive electronic versions of the C-SHARP contact us for an original copy of all materials, including the original publications, the actual rating scales, and score sheets (to ensure that formatting is correct), background information on the C-SHARP, and-if needed-more extensive normative data. In doing so, it would be helpful to receive pre-addressed envelopes, if possible.

  4. An adult version is available (A-SHARP) upon request, and will eventually be available on this website.
